We believe in structures that promote empowerment rather than compliance. Systems that recognize the roots of this community while helping students and families unpack their innate genius. At Moxie students learn to walk in authority, humility, and joy. At Moxie we believe in affirmation, acknowledgement, empowerment, engagement and awareness. Communal liberation is at our core.
The philosophy of The Moxie Collective revolved around a few questions and reminders. Remember: Oppression thrives off isolation. Connection is the only thing that can save you. Remember: Oppression thrives on superficiality. Honesty about your struggles is the key to your liberation. Remember: Your story can help save someone’s life. Your silence contributes to someone else’s struggle. Speak so we can all be free. Love so we all can be liberated. Now for the questions we want to empower our students to answer can be found below.
- How does my life have meaning and purpose?
- What gifts do I have that the world wants and needs?
- To what or whom do I feel most deeply connected?
- How can I rise above my fears and doubts?
- What or who awakens or touches the spirit within me?
At the Moxie Collective these are the questions we hope to facilitate an understanding around in hopes of having our students take their rightful place in the world.
What is The Moxie Collective? We are aiming to achieve in co-creation with students, families and community partnerships in Denver. In short, we want to revolutionize the way schools approach college readiness and prepare students for the real world. This looks like students having a truly culturally relevant curriculum that is rooted in self-actualization as well as identity work. Students will know not only their past but how it will influence their futures. Students will be able to verbalize how to implement collective action in the face of current injustices and tie this to academic findings.
We plan on doing this in a number of ways; building with and for the Denver community, storytelling as a medium to recognize unpacking and affirming our unique cultural identities. The Moxie Collective will focus on peer-to-peer mentorship that fosters not only a sense of community, but a culture of accountability that is owned and developed by the student. Our vision and theory of learning stems from the works of Bell Hooks, Paulo Freire and Zaretta Hammond. We intend on building out our praxis in a way that reflects their learnings and key findings. By doing this Moxie aims to foster an education for critical consciousness.
